The challenge

How can a flat pack piece of furniture be designed to reduce the likelyhood its thrown away prematurely?

Research & analysis

With sustainability as a goal, the materials needed to be both robust and biodegradable. Flat planes of plywood and steel brackets both are easy to refurbish, while its componentized design allows pieces to be replaced if needed. This bracket and bolt construction allows the chair to break down for ease of transport, and also be rearranged to create entirely new compositions.

Concept & strategy

Key to reducing its likelihood of disposal is the designs flexibility, dynamically adjusting to the needs of the user. The chair can quickly be converted into a side table, bench, low table with cushions, and more.

Design & development

Plywood sheets are CNC milled to create the panels, while the aesthetic of the chair naturally emerges from the bolt holes serving as potential connection points.
